CFDA Collaborates With Planned Parenthood For NYFW

Just in time for New York Fashion Week, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) have teamed up with Planned Parenthood in response to the proposed defunding of their reproductive health care service centers. The Condé Nast Creative Group has designed “Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood” magnetic pins for CFDA’s awareness movement. The pins will be distributed to designers, PR agencies, press, modeling agencies, and fashion show front-row denizens to wear. The bright pink pins have already been adopted by NYFW designers and brands to support the initiative, including Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera, Proenza Schouler, Public School, and Prabal Gurung.

“We are truly thrilled by the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s show of support for Planned Parenthood at New York Fashion Week,” said Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “Planned Parenthood has stood defiantly in the face of opposition for a century, and we’re not backing down now. The American people overwhelmingly support our organization and strongly oppose ‘defunding’ care at our health centers. Planned Parenthood’s millions of supporters, including the CFDA, are mobilizing to protect access to reproductive health and rights for everyone, including the 2.5 million patients we serve, and we will continue to fight to ensure that all people can get the care they need.”

CFDA board member Tracy Reese is leading the campaign. “We know that so many people stand with Planned Parenthood — including designers and entertainers — because they and their loved ones have relied on Planned Parenthood for health care, including life-saving care like cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing and treatment, and sex education,” Reese told the CFDA. “Planned Parenthood is often the only option for this type of care in underserved communities. By creating a visually engaging and fashionable pin, we hope to create an organic social media movement promoting awareness and education.”

The CFDA will also distribute an information card with each pin that explains the ways to get involved with the movement and includes facts about Planned Parenthood’s mission and importance in America. Although the CFDA will not be donating funds directly to Planned Parenthood through this awareness movement, the information cards encourage wearers to make donations and also to continue to spread awareness through their social media by using the hashtag #IStandwithPP.

The CFDA announced in their official statement on this initiative that “extreme politicians are trying to defund and shut down Planned Parenthood, but this is not what Americans want,” per the release. “If these politicians succeed, it will be a national health disaster and devastate care. Millions of people — nearly half of whom are people of color, and many people who live in rural areas — would lose the care they rely on each year. Without Planned Parenthood many patients would have nowhere else to go for lifesaving and life empowering care.”
