Remy Ma And Nicki Minaj Join The List Of Notable Female Rap Feuds In Hip-Hop History

Rap and hip-hop music is notorious for not only giving audiences good music, but for staying true to its culture of battles and beefs that leave us shook for years.

Throughout the years we have seen countless beefs between rappers. Male rap battles are extremely popular and never seem to get old (Notorious B.I.G v. Nas, Jay-Z v. Nas, Ice Cube v. Eazy E and N.W.A), but female rappers can also dish it out with the best of them. With the most recent rap beef in our midst between Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma, we thought it was only right to go back and remember some of the best female rap feuds of all-time.

MC Lyte vs. Antoinette

In the 1980’s, MC Lyte released a diss track, ‘10% Diss,’ after fellow female MC, Antoinette allegedly stole one of her beats. In the song MC Lyte says, “You’re a biter. Don’t stop taker, Tell you to your face, you ain’t nothin’ but a faker,” to which Antoinette answered with ‘Lights Out, Party’s Over.’ Although the retaliation proved that Antoinette can spit, it was lyrically inferior when MC Lyte dropped ‘Shut the Eff Up.’ It was five versus of straight-up disses aiming to discredit Antoinette’s ability as a lyricist and have a successful career without performing special favors—yes those kinds.

Trina vs. Khia

Both of these ladies had sexual relations with Lil’ Wayne, and after Trina felt that Khia slandered her name in the media she retaliated. It had all the ingredients of what a beef should be. There were low blows on both fronts, claiming that one would not be able to sell records without the other, and that they’re the baddest in the game.

Foxy Brown vs. Nicki Minaj

Foxy Brown was trying to resurrect her career just as a newcomer at that time, Nicki Minaj, emerged representing, Young Money. Foxy Brown released a song aimed at Minaj called, ‘Massacre,’ but it fell short. Minaj’s ability to dominate the spotlight and spit bars with a fresh, new style made Brown appear to be trying too hard. Unfortunately for her, the Barbie/Roman combo had to much buzz surrounding her for the record to have any impact.

Remy Ma vs. Lady Luck

This beef started at the well known rap battle platform, Fight Klub, in 2004. The two ladies went at it to win a prize of $20,000. Remy Ma came at it harder than Lady Luck and walked away with the money. As far as we know they ended on good terms and have the utmost respect for each other, seeing as they both gave it their all. Remy went to prison shortly after the battle, putting a kibosh on the whole beef.

Nicki Minaj vs. Lil’ Kim

A lot of people compared Nicki Minaj to Lil’ Kim due to similarities such as colorful lyrics, unapologetic language, and fearless style. Lil’ Kim didn’t take too lightly to it. In an interview with 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Lil’ Kim said she showed a song that had new sound. Shortly after that, Nicki started gaining notoriety and putting out records with that same sound. As for the statements that Minaj showed love and paid homage to Lil’ Kim, Kim said that people simply haven’t done their homework.  According to her, Minaj was always throwing shots her way. No one really knows what happened behind the scenes, but this beef has no end in the foreseeable future.
